Could: सकता

Grammar Rule:
Sub. + could + V1 + obj.

Meaning of "Could":

  • Used to show past ability, possibility, or permission.

  • Negative form: could not / couldn’t.

  • Question form: Could + subject + V1?

Examples given:

  1. I could not help him. (मैं उसकी मदद नहीं कर सका।)

  2. I could not teach him. (मैं उसे नहीं पढ़ा सका।)

  3. He could not talk to me. (वह मुझसे बातें नहीं कर सका।)

  4. They could not win this match. (वे यह मैच नहीं जीत सके।)

  5. The doctor could not save him. (डॉक्टर उसे बचा नहीं सका।)

  6. The police could not arrest him. (पुलिस उसे गिरफ्तार नहीं कर सकी।)

  7. He could not listen/hear anything. (वह कुछ नहीं सुन सका।)

  8. Could he pass? (क्या वह पास हो सका?)

  9. He could not sleep whole night. (वह पूरी रात नहीं सो सका।)

  10. I could not recognise him. (मैं उसे नहीं पहचान सका।)

  1. मैं यह सिद्ध नहीं कर सका। – I could not prove this.

  2. कोहरे की वजह से मैं कुछ देख नहीं सका। – I could not see anything because of fog.

  3. वे सफल नहीं हो सके। – They could not succeed.

  4. वह पढ़ नहीं सका। – He could not read.

  5. वह कुछ नहीं ला सका। – He could not bring anything.

  6. मैं यह सिद्ध नहीं कर सका। – I could not prove this.

  7. मैं उस दिन वहाँ पहुँच नहीं सका। – I could not reach there the day before yesterday.

  8. पहेली मैं नहीं बुझा सका। – I could not solve the riddle.

  9. क्या तुम वह काम कर सके? – Could you do that work?

  10. मैं उसका प्रस्ताव नहीं ठुकरा सका। – I could not turn down his proposal.

  1. Past Ability

  • “Could” is often used for ability in the past.
     Example: When I was young, I could run very fast.
    (जब मैं छोटा था, तब बहुत तेज़ दौड़ सकता था।)

  1. Polite Requests

  • “Could” makes your request softer and more polite than “can”.
     Example: Could you help me, please?
    (क्या आप मेरी मदद कर सकते हैं?)

  1. Possibility

  • “Could” also shows possibility (हो सकता है).
     Example: It could rain today.
    (आज बारिश हो सकती है।)

  1. Conditional Sentences

  • Used with “if” to talk about possibilities.
     Example: If I had more money, I could buy a car.
    (अगर मेरे पास और पैसे होते, तो मैं गाड़ी खरीद सकता था।)

 Quick Tip:
If you want to sound polite and professional in English, try using “Could” instead of “Can” in requests.

 “Can you send me the file?” (casual)
 “Could you send me the file, please?” (polite & professional)
